The Experience

I was already halfway through my coffee when our driver texted that he was outside the Casablanca hotel — honestly, I’d barely woken up. The high-speed train to Tangier felt almost too modern for what I’d pictured of Morocco, but there we were, gliding past green fields and sleepy towns in less than two hours. My friend tried to nap; I just watched the light change on the window glass. The drive from Tangier to Chefchaouen took us through hills that looked like they belonged in another country entirely. We wandered up to the Grand Mosque — you can’t go inside if you’re not Muslim, but Rachid pointed out its octagonal minaret and told us about its 15th-century roots. Then we walked towards Ras el-Maa waterfall, which isn’t huge but has this cool hush around it, like everyone slows down there. Women were washing rugs in the water; the smell of mint tea drifted from somewhere behind us. For a minute nobody talked — just listened to water over stones and kids splashing their feet.

The ride back felt quieter somehow. Maybe it was tiredness or maybe just that sense you get after seeing someplace that doesn’t quite leave you when you go home. The same driver got us onto the high-speed train back to Casablanca (he even helped with our bags), and by the time we reached our hotel again it felt like we’d been gone longer than a day — in a good way.
