The experience
The day starts in Chefchaouen, where the medina's blue-painted houses and cobbled streets set the tone. You'll walk through the main square, Utta El Hamam, where the 18th-century kasbah sits next to the central mosque. The market sprawls across the medina selling woven blankets, Berber jewelry, leatherware and everyday goods. It gets busy but the bargains pull most visitors in. Behind the jewelry souk lies the mellah, the former Jewish quarter, which has a noticeably different feel from the rest of the town. If you want to enter the kasbah itself, that's a separate ticket.
After the medina, the route heads into the Rif mountains to reach the Akchour Waterfalls. This series of cascades is less crowded than other Moroccan falls, and the walk passes viewpoints where you can stop and take in the mountain scenery. The waterfalls themselves are the draw: a chain of smaller cascades rather than one dramatic drop, set in a landscape that feels quieter and more remote than the medina.
Private transportation runs the whole day, and your guide travels with you in English, Spanish or French. Hotel pickup is included, so you don't arrange your own way to the meeting point. The tour runs eight hours total, which is the span needed to cover both the medina properly and reach the waterfalls with time to walk around them.
