The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the sound — metal shutters rolling up, voices bouncing off stone walls, someone calling out “salaam!” as we ducked into the first alley. Our guide, Youssef, grinned when I hesitated at the entrance. “Don’t worry,” he said, “I’ll do the talking.” The air was thick with cumin and orange blossom. I kept bumping shoulders with women in bright scarves and kids darting between stalls. It was louder than I expected, but not in a bad way — more like everyone was part of some big conversation I couldn’t quite follow.
We stopped at a stall where the owner handed me a square of something sticky-sweet (Youssef called it chebakia). It tasted like honey and sesame — honestly, I still think about that bite. My friend tried to haggle for a scarf; Youssef jumped in with rapid-fire Arabic and somehow got the price down by half. He winked at us after. “It’s all part of the game here.” At another shop, I picked up a handful of saffron threads just because they looked so bright against my palm. The merchant smiled when I tried to say thank you in French — probably butchered it.
There was this moment where we sat on low stools drinking mint tea (so sweet it almost hurt my teeth), watching old men play cards nearby. The guide told us how his grandmother used to buy her spices from this same market. It made me think about how many families have walked these alleys before us. We wandered for what felt like hours but never felt lost — Youssef always seemed to know which turn would lead to something new or quieter or just… different.
