The Experience

So, we almost missed our pickup because I couldn’t find my sunglasses — classic me. Our guide, Samir, just grinned and said, “No rush, the mosque isn’t going anywhere.” I liked him immediately. When we finally stood in front of the Hassan II Mosque, the Atlantic wind whipped around us and you could smell salt in the air. The tiles were cool under my hands. I’d seen photos before but standing there, hearing kids laughing somewhere behind us and calls to prayer echoing off the marble… it felt different. Bigger somehow.

We ducked into Rick’s Café after that — yes, like the movie — where Samir told us about his uncle who once met someone from Hollywood there (he winked; I’m still not sure if he was joking). The old medina was next: narrow alleys packed with people selling everything from leather slippers to pomegranates. A woman handed me a fig to try — sticky sweet — and when I tried to thank her in French she just laughed and waved me on. There’s this constant hum in Casablanca’s central market too; spices everywhere, colors that don’t really show up on camera.

The Royal Palace is only for looking at from outside (Samir shrugged: “Even I’ve never been inside!”), but honestly the gardens are worth it on their own. We wandered through Habous Quarter later, where French arches meet Moroccan mosaics — it’s quieter there, almost sleepy compared to downtown. At some point I lost track of time; by the time we reached Mohammed V Square pigeons were everywhere and the sky was turning gold. I still think about that light sometimes.
