The experience

If you're arriving in Casablanca for the first time or have a free afternoon, this tour anchors itself in the city's Jewish community and its relationship to Morocco's broader history. Your guide, the founder of Typically Morocco Tours, has spent more than 20 years in the city and holds close ties to its Jewish institutions. He studied Jewish Heritage and Tourism Management at ISITT with support from the Mimouna Association. He speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and three additional languages, so the tour flows in whichever language suits you.

The day opens at Temple Beth-El, one of Casablanca's most recognizable synagogues, where you'll see the stained-glass windows and learn how the building reflects the community's religious traditions. From there you move to a historic Jewish educational institution, then to the Museum of Moroccan Judaism, which holds religious objects, traditional clothing, photographs, and synagogue furnishings spanning centuries of Moroccan Jewish life. (The museum closes Saturdays and Sundays, if you're visiting on those days, the guide will arrange an exterior visit or substitute another Jewish heritage site.) You'll drive through Casablanca Finance City to see the contrast between the city's historic quarters and its modern districts, then walk the Habous Quarter with its arcades and traditional shops before stopping near the Royal Palace to hear about Morocco's kings and their historical relationship with the Jewish community.

The tour ends in two places: the beautifully restored Ettedgui Synagogue in the Old Medina, rededicated in 2016, and Casablanca's Old Jewish Cemetery, a place of memory for generations of families. If genealogy, family names, ancestral neighborhoods, or migration stories matter to you, tell your guide before the tour begins and he can weave those threads through the day. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, along with an air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water, and coffee or tea.
