The Experience

The tour leaves Agadir in the morning and heads south through Berber villages known for saffron plantations, where you stop for tea. By mid-morning you reach Fum Zguid, the last settlement before the desert proper—this is where the driver fills fuel and water and you buy anything else needed for the Sahara. From there, about three hours of driving takes you across stone plateaus and sand dunes with stops to take in the landscape: the Dry Lac Iriki, fossils scattered across the ground, and the 360-degree emptiness that makes the scale of the place sink in.

Arriving at Erg Chigaga in the afternoon, you get tea in Moroccan style, a tour of the camp to see the restaurant, bathrooms and your tent for the night, then a camel ride out to the big dunes to watch the sunset. Dinner happens back at camp with local musicians playing around a fire, and afterward you have the silence and the full sky of stars. The next morning starts early: sunrise over the dunes, breakfast, then the return journey with stops at oasis settlements where nomads live. You visit their homes, drink tea with them, and learn how they live. There's also a stop at a village where Berber women make and sell carpets from their houses—optional if you want to skip it—and finally Agadir Ifri, an old fortified settlement that was the region's first banking system. Lunch happens in the village before the drive back to Agadir.
