The experience
The boat leaves from Kotor's Old Town or from Muo, Prčanj, Stoliv or Dobrota: whichever point in Kotor Bay suits your hotel. A 20-minute panorama ride takes you past the small villages that line the water, their palaces and churches framed against the mountains. The contrast between the built landscape and the sea is the whole point of this opening stretch.
Our Lady of the Rocks is an island that does not exist by nature. Two fishermen from Perast found an icon of the Virgin on a rock jutting from the water and made a vow: if they survived, they would build an island and a church. The baroque temple that stands there now took more than 120 years to complete and is one of the largest sacred buildings in the Adriatic. You have 20 minutes to walk through the church and its museum before returning to the boat.
Perast itself is a small town of only 350 people, yet it once held 18 churches and 19 palaces: a sign of the wealth its sea captains brought home. The Church of Saint Nicholas dominates the skyline with its unfinished 55-meter bell tower. You spend 20 minutes here before the boat returns you to your starting point. Snorkelling equipment is available if the water and the stops invite it, and the skipper carries WiFi and bottled water for the ride.
