inclusions

What’s included

Your day includes pickup and return transport from Žabljak to Nevidio Canyon, guidance by experienced local guides who provide all necessary equipment—neoprene suit, harness, helmet, boots—and cover entrance fees plus insurance. After hiking back out you’ll share a hot lunch (meat, fish or vegetarian), with photos and videos from waterproof cameras included so you can relive every splashy moment later on.

I should probably admit I almost bailed when I saw the wetsuits — they looked way thicker than I expected. Our guide, Marko, grinned and said something about “Montenegro summer” not meaning warm water. He helped me wriggle into the suit (I’m still not sure if it was on backwards at first), and just like that we were piling into the van from Žabljak, all a bit nervous but pretending otherwise.

The drive out to Nevidio Canyon was quiet at first, except for Marko humming some old song under his breath. The air smelled sharp, kind of piney and cold even though it was nearly noon. When we got to the canyon entrance, he pointed out how the rock walls almost swallow up the sky — honestly, it looked more like a crack in the earth than a park. There was this moment before we started where everyone went silent except for one guy who kept fiddling with his helmet strap (I get it now). And then we stepped into the water — freezing, but somehow thrilling.

Inside Nevidio, time sort of bent. Sometimes we’d be scrambling over slick rocks or sliding down narrow chutes with water roaring in our ears; other times it was just us floating in these deep blue pools while Marko told stories about people who’d come through before us (he swears someone once brought a rubber duck). The jumps weren’t as terrifying as I thought — mostly because Marko always had another way down if you chickened out. At one point I tried to say “thank you” in Montenegrin and completely butchered it; Marko just laughed and handed me a piece of chocolate from his pocket. That might’ve been my favorite part.

By the end my hands were wrinkled and I couldn’t really feel my toes but I didn’t care. Hiking back up to the van felt weirdly triumphant — like we’d all done something together that only made sense once you’d actually been there. Lunch after (grilled trout for me) tasted better than any fancy meal I’ve had; maybe it was just being tired or maybe that’s what fresh mountain air does to food. Either way, I still think about that view back down into the canyon while we ate, legs dangling over the grass.
