Canyoning Međureč River: Rappelling & Cliff Jumping in Montenegro
Three hours rappelling waterfalls and jumping cliffs inside a canyon carved by the Međureč River.
Canyoning the Međureč River is a 3.5-hour activity where you rappel waterfalls, jump from cliffs, swim through pools and squeeze through narrow passages in a deep canyon between Bar and Ulcinj. The operator provides neoprene suits, helmets, rappelling equipment and a guide who speaks English. No prior canyoning experience is needed, though moderate fitness and comfort with heights matter. The canyon entrance and exit sit close to the road, so you skip the long hike in and out.

The experience
You start at the canyon entrance where the guide fits you with a neoprene suit, helmet and rappelling gear, then briefs you on the route ahead. The Međureč has carved a narrow, deep canyon through Rumija mountain, and the next three and a half hours take you through it: rappelling down waterfalls, the highest over 30 meters, swimming across cold pools, squeezing through tight stone passages and jumping from cliffs about ten meters high. The water is clean and the canyon walls close in tight enough that sunlight barely reaches the floor in some stretches.
A guide stays with you the whole time to help you through each section. You need moderate physical fitness and no fear of heights, but no canyoning experience beforehand. The good part: because the entrance and exit are both near the road, you don't hike miles to reach the canyon or back out of it when you're done.
What’s included

Is this one for you? This activity suits anyone with moderate fitness and no fear of heights who wants to move through the canyon actively (rappelling, jumping and swimming) rather than watching from a distance. The tight passages and 30-meter waterfalls mean you need to be comfortable in deep water and on vertical rock. If you have spinal injuries, are pregnant, or have cardiovascular concerns, this canyon is not the right choice.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the highest waterfall I'll rappel down in the Međureč canyon?
The highest waterfall is more than 30 meters. You'll rappel several waterfalls of different heights throughout the three and a half hours, and the guide helps you down each one.
Do I need canyoning experience before I book this?
No previous canyoning experience is required. You need moderate physical fitness and comfort with heights, and the guide will brief you and stay with you through every section of the canyon.
What does the Međureč canyon actually look like when you're inside it?
The Međureč is very deep and narrow, with tight stone passages in places, cold clean water pools, and cliff walls that sometimes block out most of the light. You'll move through it by swimming, rappelling, jumping and squeezing through the tightest sections.
How long is the actual canyoning part, and do I have to hike to get there?
The canyoning itself takes about three and a half hours. The entrance and exit are both close to the local road, so you don't have to hike long distances to reach the canyon or back out of it.
What gear do I wear, and is it included?
You wear a neoprene suit, helmet and rappelling equipment. All of it is included, along with bottled water, snacks and photos and videos the guide takes during the activity.
