The experience
The tour begins in Budva and moves straight into the countryside, leaving the crowded city behind for cooler air and open views of the Budva Riviera. You stop first at a nearly 1000-year-old monastery, then continue higher into the peaceful hills to a second historic site positioned 500 meters above Sveti Stefan, known for its revered icons of the Virgin Mary. Both stops sit on the route that frames the afternoon. The landscape itself is part of what you come for, and the guide fills in the stories as you move through it.
The real center of the day is the meal at a local family home. You eat at a table surrounded by the garden where much of the food was grown, and the spread includes homemade prosciutto, dried ham, cheese, boiled eggs from the family's chickens, olives and vegetables picked fresh. Alongside it comes homemade wine and loza, the Montenegrin grape brandy produced by Rajko, the householder and descendant of the Kuzman family. A lineage that has lived in these hills for centuries and defended the region during the Ottoman occupation. The meal is unhurried. You eat, drink and listen to the stories that connect the food and the place. A vegetarian menu is available if you need it.
The journey back to Budva is the final leg, giving you time to settle after the afternoon. The whole experience runs four hours from start to return, and the air-conditioned vehicle handles the winding roads up and down the hills.
