The experience
You leave Chisinau in an air-conditioned vehicle for a one-hour drive to the Transnistria checkpoint, where your licensed guide manages the entry process and helps you receive the migration card you'll need to keep and present when you leave. The region operates on its own currency and rules, so traveling with someone who knows the border routine removes the friction most independent visitors face. Once across, the day moves through two cities that feel like they stopped in the 1980s: Soviet monuments stand in central squares, Lenin's statue overlooks the Gorky Cinema in Bender, and the architectural style of every building reflects the era when this territory declared itself independent from Moldova.
In Bender, you'll walk the Fortress, a medieval stronghold that has shifted hands through centuries of wars and now stands as the city's defining landmark. The military-historical memorial complex nearby, opened in 2008 on the site of an old cemetery, honors soldiers from the Russian Imperial Army. The Triumphal Arch marks the city's entrance. In Tiraspol, the capital, Catherine Park spreads across the main plaza (built in honor of Catherine the Great, who ordered the Sredinnaya fortress constructed here in 1792), and the Tank Monument draws photos from every visitor. The guide points out how the Soviet aesthetic persists in every street, and explains the region's history before World War II and its path to the present day.
The tour runs six to seven hours total. You'll need cash in Moldovan Lei or Euros to exchange for local rubles inside Transnistria. Credit cards don't work, and ATMs don't exist. Only convert what you plan to spend, since Transnistrian rubles cannot be exchanged outside the region. Bring your valid passport and keep the migration card safe from the moment you receive it at the checkpoint.

What is the Bender Fortress and how old is it?
The Fortress of Bender traces its origins to the medieval era and grew in strategic importance over centuries, with the Genoese extending their influence into the area by the 13th century. Today it stands as a monument to the region's complex history and is one of the main stops on the tour.
How long does the full tour take, and what cities do we visit?
