The experience
The cenote dinner starts with a guided tour that uses the legend of Xibalba from Mayan mythology as its frame, setting the context for everything that follows. You'll move through the museum space before descending to the dining area, where a table decorated with candles and flowers sits 20 meters below ground level. The only light comes from the candles and the stone walls around you: thousands of natural formations created over millennia, plus the sacred water of the cenote itself.
Dinner is three courses: an entrée of zikillpak (a traditional Mayan dish) with corn toast; a main of chicken pibil with rice and Mayan cream; and marzipan for dessert. You eat with a 360° view of the cenote and the museum above, the stone and water your only company besides the other guests: the group maxes out at 20 people. A Mayan ceremony may happen during your visit, depending on the day.
Before or after dinner, you'll swim in the cenote itself. The whole experience runs roughly two hours from start to finish. Guides lead the tour in English or Spanish, and the activity suits all fitness levels.
