Canoe four kilometers to Mexico's largest Huasteca waterfall, then swim in a limestone cenote

A 12-hour guided tour from Xilitla or Ciudad Valles that combines a canoe trip up the turquoise Tampáon River to Tamul Waterfall, swimming in Cenote Cueva del Agua, and watching thousands of swallows arrive at their sanctuary at dusk. Hotel pickup, lifejackets, entrance fees, and a 25-dish regional buffet are included. The guide speaks Spanish and children from age one are welcome.

The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Xilitla or Ciudad Valles, then moves straight to the river. You'll canoe four kilometers upstream on the Tampáon River (a turquoise waterway cut through a canyon) to reach Tamul Waterfall, the largest in the Huasteca region. The paddle itself is the route: the canyon walls and water color are what frame the morning.

After the waterfall, you swim in Cenote Cueva del Agua, a limestone cave pool fed by the same river. The cenote sits right beside the Tampáon, so the two water experiences anchor the day. Later, you move to the bird sanctuary basement to watch the swallow arrival: thousands of birds returning to roost at dusk, a spectacle the operator calls the show that opens and closes the itinerary. Between these three stops, you eat a buffet of 25 regional dishes: enchiladas, beef, pork, chicken, vegan plates, eggs, seasonal coffee and fruit water.

An air-conditioned vehicle handles transport between sites. Lifejackets are provided for the canoe. The guide speaks Spanish. The tour runs 12 hours total, so plan the rest of your day around an early start and a late return.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want a full day built around water and wildlife rather than a quick stop at one landmark. The 12-hour commitment and the canoe paddle mean you need moderate fitness and a willingness to spend the morning on the river, but that is what makes the waterfall approach and the cenote swim feel like a journey instead of a checkpoint.
