The experience

The tour starts at the Intercultural Museum and moves into the heart of Todos Santos, beginning at the historic square in front of the Manuel Márquez de León Theater, the state's second theater. Your guide will walk you through the life of Francisco J. Mújica, the revolutionary who built it in 1994, and then back further still. To the ancient peoples who inhabited the oasis for centuries: the palm culture, the Guaycuras, and the Pericúes. The route follows old streets toward the Cultural Center, founded by poet and professor Néstor Agúndez, a cultural pillar of the town.

Along the way, you'll hear the lesser-known stories of Todos Santos and the lives of other iconic figures: the kind of history that only gets passed down among people who actually live here. The second half of the tour brings you face-to-face with some of the town's most emblematic artists, people whose work is rooted in the biocultural landscapes around them. Your guide will also fill you in on upcoming exhibitions, events and activities, so even a short stay feels connected to what's actually happening in the town right now.

Bottled water is included. The tour is wheelchair accessible and suitable for all fitness levels. The guide speaks English and Spanish.

What's the Manuel Márquez de León Theater and why does it matter to Todos Santos?

The Manuel Márquez de León Theater is the state's second theater, built in 1994 by Francisco J. Mújica during his time as a revolutionary and constitutionalist leader. It sits in the historic square at the heart of the town and is a landmark your guide will use to anchor the story of Todos Santos' political and cultural past.

Who is leading this tour?

The tour is led by the director of the Intercultural Museum of Baja California Sur, a Sudcalifornian artist and historian. He's the only guide in Todos Santos with federal recognition as a Community Tourist Guide and is deeply embedded in the town's artistic community.

Will I actually meet artists during the tour?

Yes. The second part of the tour includes meeting some of the town's most emblematic artists in person. Your guide will introduce you to creators whose work draws from the biocultural landscapes of the region and can tell you about their current and upcoming exhibitions.

What's the difference between this tour and a typical guidebook walk?

This tour focuses on stories passed down through generations among people who actually live in Todos Santos: the layered history and cultural identity that don't appear in standard guides. Your guide's active participation in the artistic community means you'll hear about what's happening now, not just what happened in the past.
