The experience

Pickup happens before dawn. Your driver arrives at your Mexico City hotel or Airbnb around 5 a.m. and drives you to the balloon launch zone in Teotihuacán, arriving by 6 a.m. You'll be met with coffee, tea, fruit and cookies while you register and wait for the flight crew's go-ahead. The real moment comes at the launch field: you'll watch the balloon inflate, a slow unfurling of fabric and fire that takes twenty or thirty minutes, and this is when most people shoot their photos and videos. The balloon is enormous and the light is still soft.

The flight itself runs 40 to 60 minutes depending on wind and weather. You're standing in the basket with a handful of other passengers, rising over the Teotihuacán Valley as the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon come into view below. The scale shifts as you climb: what looked monumental from the ground becomes part of a vast geometric pattern laid across the valley floor. When you land, the crew pours sparkling wine for a traditional champagne toast, and you'll get a flight certificate as a souvenir.

Breakfast happens at a restaurant near the archaeological zone: a full Mexican buffet with stews, fruit, cereals and desserts. After that, you have a choice: if you booked the option with archaeological access, you get up to two hours free to walk the ruins and the plazas on your own. If you'd rather skip the ruins, you head straight back to Mexico City, arriving around 1 p.m. The whole experience runs about six and a half hours from pickup to drop-off.
