The experience
You meet your guide at 6:30am at the company office in Holbox with a light breakfast of coffee, tea, fruit, yogurt and sweet buns. After a briefing and gear check, you walk to the pier for a one- to two-hour boat ride to the whale shark zone. Once there, you swim in pairs with your guide. The setup keeps you safe and gives each swimmer real attention. The whale sharks here are totally harmless. The biggest fish in the world comes to Holbox every year, and you'll be in the water beside them.
On the return route, the boat stops at Cuevones reef near Cabo Catoche for snorkeling. The reef holds sea turtles, nurse sharks, lobsters, squids, octopuses and reef fish. Between the whale shark zone and the reef, you may spot dolphins, giant manta rays, flamingos and other species from the boat. The crew catches fresh fish during the journey and prepares ceviche onboard. You'll eat it at Santa Paula beach, where you can swim and stretch your legs before the final 45-minute ride back to Holbox. All snorkeling equipment, a bilingual guide, cool water and sodas are included. Vegetarian ceviche with guacamole and mango is available if you don't eat fish.
