Enter the water with the world's largest fish, then reef-snorkel where two seas meet

A full-day whale shark swim from Isla Holbox puts you in the water twice: first with 45-foot whale sharks in the Gulf of Mexico, then at a Caribbean reef near Cabo Catoche where the Caribbean meets the Gulf. Your bilingual guide enters the water with you in pairs, and the day includes snorkel gear, light breakfast, fresh ceviche lunch, and beverages.

The experience

You meet your guide and group one block from the ferry pier on Isla Holbox, get a briefing and snorkel gear, eat a light breakfast of coffee, tea, fruit and sweet buns, then board the boat for a 1 to 2-hour ride into the Gulf of Mexico. On the way you might spot giant manta rays, dolphins and sea turtles. When the boat reaches the whale shark zone, you enter the water two at a time with your guide to swim alongside these 45-foot giants, the biggest fish in the world, while your guide shows you how to observe them without disturbing their habitat.

On the return, you stop at Cabo Catoche, the northernmost point of the Yucatan Peninsula, where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico. Here you snorkel the "cuevones" reef, looking for sea turtles, nurse sharks, lobsters, squids, octopi and reef fish. The boat then takes you to Boca Santa Paula for a swim and to eat fresh ceviche made with the day's catch, plus guacamole and mango for those who don't eat fish. A 45-minute boat ride brings you back to Isla Holbox.

The day runs about seven hours total. Snorkel gear, bottled water, soft drinks and all meals are included. Your guide speaks both English and Spanish.
