The Experience
I didn’t expect the air to feel that cool on my arms at 5:30 a.m. in Holbox. The sky was still holding onto a few stars when we met our guide, Luis — who, by the way, has the kind of easy smile that makes you trust him with your life jacket. We climbed into the kayaks and pushed off into the mangroves just as the first streaks of orange started to show up behind us. It’s weird how quiet it gets out there, except for these little splashes from our paddles and this one bird (Luis said it was a heron?) making a noise like it was clearing its throat.
Rowing through the mangrove labyrinth felt like sneaking backstage at nature’s show. The water was glassy and sometimes I’d see something move just under the surface — Luis joked about crocodiles but then pointed one out, half-hidden near some roots. My heart did a little jump but honestly, it was more curious than scary. At one point we drifted past a group of flamingos standing so still I thought they were fake for a second. Their feathers looked almost grey until the sun hit them and then suddenly — pink everywhere. I tried whispering “buenos días” but they weren’t impressed.
We stopped for fruit (watermelon never tastes as good as it does after an hour of paddling) and just listened to the wind in the branches for a while. There’s this smell out there, kind of salty-sweet, mixed with mud — not bad, just… real. I kept thinking about how most people were probably still asleep back in town while we were out here watching everything wake up. So yeah, if you want to see Holbox before anyone else does — this is it.
