The experience
San Carlos sits on the only reef in the central Gulf of California with extensive coral growth, and this snorkel is built around that single advantage. You start at Plaza Seascape with a short presentation on the ecology and the fish and invertebrates you're likely to encounter, so when you're in the water identifying what you see, you already know what you're looking at. The guide provides snorkel gear and fits it to you before you leave the meeting point.
The snorkel itself runs from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m., with the route adjusted for current conditions and the group's experience level. A marine biologist stays with you the whole time to help you find species and confirm what you're seeing. After you come back ashore, the group gathers to go over what you observed, using field guides to nail down identifications while you eat freshly prepared ceviche made from locally caught fish.
The whole activity takes three hours from start to finish, including the drive to the snorkel site and the time spent on the reef. You'll need to be comfortable swimming in the sea. The operator notes this is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health, though it suits all fitness levels otherwise.
