Step-by-step itinerary
Open ocean sardine expedition
- Depart from Puerto San Carlos
- Sail to Pacific Ocean waters
- Search for sardine concentrations
- Observe marine wildlife activity
- Learn about Bahía Magdalena ecology
The experience
This is not a tour that follows a fixed itinerary. You leave Puerto San Carlos at dawn and head into the open Pacific with a captain and guide who have spent their lives reading these waters. The expedition hunts for sardine balls (massive, coordinated schools that attract everything from sea lions to frigatebirds to whales), and the wildlife activity around them sets the pace for the day. Each outing is different because nature decides where the action is, and the guides know how to find it. You'll spend eight hours on the water learning how Bahia Magdalena connects to one of Mexico's most productive marine ecosystems, not from a script but from people who work in it.
You snorkel in the open ocean where the sardine balls concentrate, wearing fins, mask and neoprene provided. The guides watch the water constantly and move the boat when the activity shifts. Between the feeding events, you'll learn the ecological importance of the bay and why this particular stretch of the Pacific sustains such intense marine life. Water and juice are carried for the day. At the end, the crew serves ceviche (adjusted for any dietary needs).
The expedition requires a minimum of four participants to depart. If that number isn't reached, you'll be offered an alternative date or a full refund. Guides speak English and Spanish.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly is a sardine ball and why does it attract so much wildlife?
A sardine ball is a massive, tightly coordinated school of sardines that forms when they're hunted by predators. The concentration attracts sea lions, whales, dolphins and diving birds all at once, creating intense feeding activity. The guides navigate to these events when they occur during your expedition.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel on this expedition?
You need a high level of physical fitness for this eight-hour open ocean expedition. The snorkeling happens in open water where sardine balls concentrate, not in a sheltered lagoon, and the boat moves to follow the action. The guides will assess conditions and your comfort level before entering the water.
What happens if we don't find sardine balls on the day I go?
The expedition searches for sardine balls, but nature sets the pace and the location. The guides know these waters intimately and will look for the most active marine life that day. If sardine balls don't concentrate where you're searching, the crew will pursue other wildlife activity in the bay.
How long does the snorkeling portion last, and can I stay on the boat instead?
The expedition is eight hours total on the water, with snorkeling happening when sardine balls or other marine life are located. You'll need to be comfortable entering the open ocean. The experience is built around being in the water where the action is. The guides decide when and where to enter based on conditions.
Is this tour suitable for someone visiting Bahia Magdalena for the first time?
Yes, if you have high fitness and comfort in open ocean conditions. The guides are born and raised in these waters and will explain the ecosystem and the marine phenomena you encounter. This is designed for travelers seeking authentic wildlife encounters far from traditional tourist routes, not a conventional sightseeing tour.
