The experience
The day starts with a 30-minute ride to the canyon entrance, then you're on foot in the riverbed itself. You'll wade upstream, climb over smooth rock formations and swim through pools of clear water as the canyon walls narrow around you. The trek is active and physical (you're moving through the landscape rather than walking a trail beside it), so moderate fitness matters. A guide leads the group in English or Spanish, setting the pace and pointing out the route through the water and over the rocks.
What changes with the season: in the rainy months, a hidden waterfall flows into the canyon, adding a second water feature to the trek. The rest of the year the pools are there, but the waterfall is dry. Either way, you're moving through the same canyon and the same rock formations. You'll get wet, so bring a change of clothes and shoes that can handle water.
The trek takes 4 hours total, including the ride out and back. You get a helmet for safety, a walking stick to brace yourself on slippery rocks, and bottled water to drink along the way. Public transportation runs nearby if you're arranging your own way to the meeting point.
