A protected cove where you breathe underwater for the first time.

Learn to scuba dive at Las Caletas, a secluded beach south of Puerto Vallarta, with a PADI-certified instructor guiding your first dive in protected coves. The experience includes a 50-minute boat ride, all diving gear, lunch and seven hours total. This is built for first-time divers or anyone without full certification who wants to explore Banderas Bay safely under expert supervision.

The Experience

Las Caletas sits on the south coast of Puerto Vallarta, reachable by a scenic 50-minute boat ride. The day starts with an introduction to scuba diving from a PADI-certified instructor—how the equipment works, how to breathe underwater, what to expect below. Then you head out on the water, and once you arrive at the cove, you put on the wetsuit and BCD, check your regulator, and descend into the bay with your instructor at your side. The water is calm and clear enough that you can see the rock formations and reef life without fighting current or visibility.

Your first dive happens in one of Las Caletas' protected coves, where the depth and conditions are designed for beginners. You stay close to your instructor the whole time, learning to equalize pressure in your ears, control your buoyancy, and move through the water. Banderas Bay holds colorful sea life and rock formations—what you see depends on the season and the cove, but the point is not the species count; it is the moment you realize you can stay down there and breathe. After the dive, you surface, and the boat brings you back to the beach.

Lunch is included, and the full day runs seven hours from start to finish. You'll need to sign an acknowledgement of risk before you dive, and the center requires at least moderate physical fitness. If you're flying after this, wait at least 12 hours before you get on a plane—that's a PADI safety rule for new divers. Public transportation options are available near the departure point if you don't have your own ride.
