The Experience

I didn’t think I’d actually go through with parasailing in Puerto Vallarta — my stomach was doing somersaults just watching the other parachutes bobbing above the sand. But the crew at the beach (right in the Hotel Zone, so you can’t miss it) had this calm way about them. One guy, I think his name was Luis, handed me a harness and grinned like he’d seen a thousand nervous tourists before. He showed me how to sit back and let the wind do its thing. The salt in the air made everything feel a little sticky, but also kind of alive, if that makes sense.

The moment my feet left the sand — honestly, it’s a blur. There was this whoosh of wind and suddenly I was floating up, higher than I expected, and everything below got quiet except for some distant music from a beach bar. You get this wide-open view: Banderas Bay curving out forever on one side, those green Sierra Madre mountains on the other. It’s not just postcard pretty — you notice stuff you wouldn’t see otherwise, like pelicans gliding below or maybe even a turtle if you’re lucky (I thought I saw one but could’ve been a rock). The city looks small from up there. My hands were sweaty on the straps but after a minute I just let go and tried to take it all in.

Landing back on the sand was easier than I thought — they talked me through it step by step while waving their arms around so I couldn’t mess it up even if I tried. There’s bottled water waiting when you’re done (needed that), and you can just hang out in their little shaded area while your heart rate comes down. Eight or ten minutes in the air goes by fast but sticks with you longer than you’d think. Sometimes now when I walk by that stretch of beach, I look up and remember what it felt like to float over all of it for a bit.
