The Experience

Salt clings to your skin before you even step onto the boat—there’s that warm, humid air you only get in the bay. Our captain, Miguel, greeted us with a grin and a quick rundown of the day’s plan. The boat felt sturdy but not fancy—just right for a real fishing trip. We set out early, when the water was still glassy and pelicans skimmed the surface looking for breakfast.

We drifted past rocky outcrops I’d never noticed from shore. Miguel handed me a rod and showed me how to cast—he made it look easy, but my first try landed with a splash way too close to the boat. No one minded; he just laughed and gave me some tips. Out here, you might hook anything from Bonito to Dorado if you’re lucky. I could hear the distant hum of another boat, but mostly it was just us, the water, and an occasional shout when someone got a bite.

Later on, we anchored near a quiet cove where the water turned that unreal turquoise shade. The crew passed around snorkeling masks—mine smelled faintly of sunscreen—and we slipped into the sea. There were schools of tiny fish darting around coral patches, flashes of silver everywhere you looked. One of the sailors pointed out a pufferfish hiding under a rock; I’d have missed it otherwise.
