The Experience
The first thing I remember is the sound — wheels humming over the old stones along Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón, gulls overhead, and someone playing guitar nearby. Our guide, Miguel, waved us down by a bronze sculpture I’d never noticed before (he called it “the boy on the seahorse,” which honestly fits). We zigzagged through little streets past the Church of Guadalupe and then suddenly we were dodging fruit carts and laughing at our own wobbly steering. The air smelled like sweet bread and sunscreen.
I’d never tried an electric bike before this tour — turns out you don’t have to be super fit to keep up. Crossing Isla del Río Cuale was my favorite part early on; there were cats everywhere and a woman selling mango slices with chili. Miguel told us about Gringo Gulch and pointed out Elizabeth Taylor’s old house (I tried to snap a photo but got mostly my thumb). After that, we started climbing into the Romance district and Paso Ancho, where everything got quieter except for birds and our breathing.
The climb into the Sierra Madre Mountains felt easier than I expected — maybe because of the bikes or just being distracted by all the green around us. By the time we reached Rancho Mi Abuelo, I was starving. The river here is cold enough to wake you up fast if you dip your feet in (I did). Lunch was optional but nobody skipped it; tortillas were made right in front of us, still warm when we pulled them apart. There was a quick tequila tasting too — I tried to say “salud” properly but probably butchered it. Miguel laughed anyway.
I still think about that moment by the river: sunlight flickering through leaves, hands sticky from mango juice, everyone just quiet for a minute listening to water over rocks. The ride back down felt faster somehow, maybe because we knew what was waiting at the end — or maybe because downhill is just easier. Either way, if you’re looking for an electric bike tour in Puerto Vallarta that actually gets you out of town and into real mountain air… well, this is it.
What’s included
Your day includes bottled water throughout your ride plus time to relax in natural river pools at Rancho Mi Abuelo; lunch can be ordered separately at their restaurant and there’s also a tequila tasting experience before heading back toward Puerto Vallarta’s center.
