The Experience

I didn’t expect the Malecón to be so alive at 9am—there was this salty breeze off the Bay of Banderas and the sound of someone tuning a guitar near one of those wild bronze sculptures. Will, our guide, handed me a helmet that still smelled faintly like coconut sunscreen (someone before me must’ve been on vacation mode too). He waved us over to our bikes and pointed out where the boardwalk curves past the sand, almost close enough you could dip your toes in if you really tried. We set off slow—Will kept chatting about how every statue has some story or scandal behind it. I kept stopping for photos. Couldn’t help it.

Somewhere near the pier in the Romantic Zone, we paused for water and Will told us about how the bay changes colors depending on the season—he said winter mornings are his favorite because everything looks sharper. He showed us this tiny green park tucked between shops; there were kids chasing pigeons and an old man selling mango slices with chili powder (I bought one, got chili all over my fingers). The private bike tour meant we could linger as long as we wanted—no one rushed us when I got distracted by a mural or tried to pronounce “Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe” without butchering it (Will just laughed).

The church itself was quieter than I expected. Inside, it smelled like candles and cool stone. There was a woman arranging flowers near the altar who nodded when we came in—not unfriendly, just busy.
