Taste your way through a taco maker's favorite spots and understand why locals eat the way they do

Taco101 is a 2.5-hour taco walk and tasting in Puerto Vallarta led by a guide who has run cultural food tours for eight years. You'll visit up to five family-run taco stands and a corn tortilla factory in the central and south neighborhoods, taste 5 to 10 different tacos with salsas and toppings, and learn the history of tacos and how they're prepared across Mexico. Domestic beer, agua fresca, dessert and all the tacos you want are included. The guide speaks English and Spanish, and children from age 2 are welcome.

The Experience

What makes this walk different from eating tacos on your own is the guide—someone who has led over a thousand food tours and knows which stands locals actually choose for breakfast and lunch, not the ones that cater to tourists. You'll start in the central and south neighborhoods and move between street stands and small eateries, all family businesses, stopping at a corn tortilla factory to see how the foundation of every taco gets made. The pace is relaxed, built around eating and talking rather than rushing between photo stops.

Over 2.5 hours you'll taste 5 to 10 different tacos—beef, pork, fish, seafood, cheese and refried beans—along with the salsas and toppings that change how they taste. Domestic beer comes with the walk, and you can drink as much purified water and agua fresca (the fruit drinks locals drink) as you want. Dessert closes the meal. By the end, you'll know enough about how tacos work and where to find them that you can explore the rest of the city's taco scene on your own with confidence. The guide also points out additional spots you can visit later and shares tips on how to get more out of your time in Vallarta.

Vegetarian options are usually available at the stops you visit. The walk suits all fitness levels, and children from age 2 can join—they can ride in a stroller if needed. Public transportation is nearby if you want to get to the starting point that way.

Is this one for you?Book this walk if you want to eat the tacos locals choose for themselves, not the ones marketed to visitors. Top questions

How many different tacos will I taste on this walk?

You'll taste 5 to 10 different tacos across the stops, with access to all the salsas and toppings at each one. The exact number depends on how the guide's favorite spots are running that day, but the walk is designed so you eat plenty.

Do I need to arrange my own way to the starting point?

The walk does not include private transportation to meet the guide. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need to get there, and the guide can tell you where to meet when you book.

What happens at the corn tortilla factory?

The corn tortilla factory is one of the stops on the walk where you'll see how tortillas are made—the base ingredient for almost every taco you'll taste. It's a working family business, not a museum, so you get to see the process as it happens.

Are there vegetarian tacos on this walk?

Vegetarian options are usually available at the taco stands you visit. Let the guide know before the walk starts if you have dietary preferences, and they can point out which tacos work for you at each stop.

How long does the walk take?

The walk runs 2.5 hours from start to finish, including all the eating, walking between stops and learning about how tacos are made and eaten across Mexico.

What language does the guide speak?

The guide leads the walk in English or Spanish, so you can book whichever works for you.
