The Experience

The first thing I remember is how quiet Teotihuacan felt at sunrise—just a few birds and our small group crunching over gravel. Our guide, Alejandra, waved us over to a patch of shadow near the Pyramid of the Moon and told us stories about ancient rituals. The air smelled faintly dusty and sweet, like sun-warmed stone mixed with wildflowers. I’d seen photos of this place forever but standing there—with barely anyone else around—felt weirdly private. We learned about obsidian blades and saw these Xoloitzcuintle dogs—hairless, warm-skinned, kind of goofy looking but apparently sacred since Aztec times. My friend tried mezcal with chili salt and made such a face that even Don Luis laughed.

We finished at the Basilica of Guadalupe where people touched their rosaries to the railings. The air inside was thick with candle smoke and singing—honestly gave me goosebumps even though I’m not religious. By the time we got dropped off near Angel of Independence, my shoes were dusty and my head was full. I still think about that silent moment in the cave sometimes.
