Step-by-step itinerary
Visit lagoon and three cenotes
- Swim and take photos at Kaan Luum Lagoon
- Swim in sacred open cenote Zemway
- Swim in another open cenote following Mayan traditions
- Swim in underground cenote with marine life
- Enjoy regional lunch at local restaurant
- Stop for photos at Tulum blue letters
The experience
The day starts at the Super Aki Market in Tulum City, where you're picked up for the drive south to Kaan Luum Lagoon. The lagoon sits in the middle of the jungle, and what makes it singular is the color contrast: the water shifts from turquoise at the edges to deep green where the cenote drops 80 meters down in the center. The shallow parts are warm and clear enough to swim and photograph. The guide explains how the Mayans saw these cenotes as sacred, formed over millions of years by underground water.
From there you move to Cenote Zemway, an open cenote where you can swim in the same waters the Mayans used in their traditions, and then to Cenote Zacil-Ha, another open site. The third stop is Cenote Mutulha, an underground cenote with small marine life, where the enclosed space and still water make for a different kind of swim. You bring your own towel and swimsuit. Lifejackets are available in the cenotes if you want one. Between the sites, there's a photo break at Tulum's giant blue letters, the landmark most visitors photograph from the road.
Lunch happens at a regional restaurant partway through the day: one dish to choose from, included in the price. The tour wraps with the drive back to your pickup point in Tulum City. Twelve hours is a full commitment, but it covers four water sites most visitors never find on their own, plus the history behind why they matter.

What is Kaan Luum Lagoon and why is it different from the cenotes?
Kaan Luum Lagoon is a shallow turquoise lagoon with a deep cenote in its center: around 80 meters deep, one of the deepest in the region. The color contrast between the shallow edges and the deep center is what makes it unique. You can swim in the warm, clear water and see the depth change beneath you.
Do I need to know how to swim or snorkel to do this tour?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. The cenotes have shallow areas for swimming and wading. Lifejackets are available in the cenotes if you want one. You bring your own towel and swimsuit.
What does the guide explain about the cenotes?
The guide explains the history of each cenote and why the Mayans considered them sacred and ceremonial places. The cenotes formed over millions of years from underground water, and the guide walks you through that geology and cultural significance at each stop.
What's included in the lunch, and when does it happen?
Lunch is at a regional food restaurant and includes one dish to choose from. It happens partway through the tour day, between the cenote visits. Drinks at the restaurant are not included.
How do I get picked up, and where does the tour start?
Round transport is included from the Super Aki Market in Tulum City. The tour picks you up there and returns you to the same point at the end of the 12-hour day.
