Step-by-step itinerary

Iztaccihuatl Volcano Hike Experience

  • Start early morning journey to La Joya
  • Observe landscapes and flora along trails
  • Begin hike from 3990 meters altitude
  • Hike up to 4200 or 4350 meters
  • Take panoramic photos of volcanoes

The experience

The hike starts before dawn when transport picks you up and heads to Paso de Cortés, the mountain pass where Hernán Cortés and the Spanish conquistadors crossed in 1519 on their way to Mexico-Tenochtitlan. You begin hiking from 3,990 meters and climb depending on the group's physical condition: most reach 4,200 meters, some go higher to 4,350. The alpinist guide sets the pace and watches the group's energy. This is not a race to a summit but a mountain walk through changing terrain.

As you climb, the landscape shifts from seasonal snow at higher elevations to the diverse plants and wildlife lower down. The quiet of the mountain and the panoramic views of the volcanoes, weather permitting, are what people come for. If you're carrying a camera, the light and the scale of the Valle de México below make for strong photographs. The guide knows the trails and the mountain's moods. Bad weather can force a route change or, in extreme cases, a cancellation for safety.

The full day runs about 11 hours from pickup to return. Bring water and light snacks (chocolate, granola bars, nuts) to keep your energy up, and wear proper hiking boots and mountain clothing: sandals and sneakers won't work on these trails. Children under 16 cannot participate. You'll need your passport or a photocopy showing your entry stamp into Mexico for park access.

What’s included

  • Hotel pickup (on the private option).
  • round-trip transport to and from Paso de Cortés.
  • entrance to the volcanoes natural park.
  • and an alpinist guide for the entire hike.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What elevation do most people reach on the Iztaccihuatl hike?

Most hikers reach 4,200 meters, though the group can climb to 4,350 meters if fitness levels allow. The alpinist guide adjusts the target based on how the group is moving and feeling during the ascent.

Does the hike go all the way to the summit of Iztaccihuatl?

No. The hike climbs from 3,990 meters to 4,200 or 4,350 meters on the mountain trails. This is a high-altitude walk, not a summit push. The pace and the group's condition determine how far up you go.

What happens if the weather turns bad on the day of the hike?

The guide may modify the route if conditions worsen. In extremely bad weather, the activity is canceled completely for safety. You'll be notified and can reschedule or get a refund according to the cancellation policy.

Can I see the volcanoes from Paso de Cortés during the hike?

Yes, if the weather allows. The panoramic views of the volcanoes and the Valle de México are one of the main reasons people do this hike. Clear mornings offer the best visibility. Clouds can roll in later in the day.

Is hotel pickup included, or do I need to meet the group somewhere?

Hotel pickup is included if you book the private tour option. The shared tour option has a set meeting point. Confirm the details when you book.
