Hike to a volcano crater at night, meditate at sunrise, then soar over the world's longest urban cable car
A 2-day guided volcano tour from Mexico City combines a night hike in the Sierra de Santa Catalina protected area with sunrise meditation, specialty coffee tasting, and a picnic above the clouds. The experience
The tour starts with an overnight stay in a shared room in one of Mexico City's most popular neighborhoods, positioned before the hike begins. You'll fly over the city's Guinness World Record-holding ring road, 10.6 km of urban infrastructure, to reach the starting point. The real work begins at night: your guide leads you into the Sierra de Santa Catalina protected natural area near the Tetlalmanche volcano, where the darkness and the landscape create conditions for what comes next.
The night hike culminates in a meditation session timed to catch the first rays of sun rising behind Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl, the two volcanoes visible from the crater. After sunrise, you'll have specialty coffee and a picnic above the clouds before heading down. The second day takes you to the world's longest public transport cable car, where instead of walking through a station, you ride above the murals painted on the route below. Before returning to your accommodation, you'll take part in a reforestation activity: planting a tree in one of the city's poorest communities as part of a forest being built by tourists.
Breakfast and lunch are provided throughout the two days. The guide speaks English and Spanish, so you can follow the commentary in whichever language works for you. Children are welcome from age 12, and the hike is suitable for all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.
