The Experience

“You ever seen water this blue?” That’s what our guide, Ana, asked as we slowed the boat near Isla Contoy. I just stared — it was almost too bright to look at straight on. The spray from the speedboat still clung to my arms, salty and cool. We’d left Cancun early (private pickup, so no waiting around), and by the time we hit the reef for snorkeling, the sun was already high but not burning yet. I’m not much of a snorkeler but Ana handed me the mask and said, “Just follow me.” There were parrotfish everywhere — flashes of yellow and blue darting between coral that looked like old bones and neon fans. I kept swallowing seawater because I couldn’t stop grinning under the mask.

On Isla Contoy itself, there was this hush — just wind in the palms and birds wheeling overhead. The island’s a protected reserve so you don’t see crowds or souvenir stands, just sand that squeaks under your feet and water so shallow you can walk out forever. Lunch was fish Tikin xi style (Ana made sure I said it right; I didn’t), rice, guacamole — all laid out under a palapa with cold beer after snorkeling. The grilled fish had that smoky edge you only get from wood fires by the beach. I remember thinking: if I could bottle this smell, I’d open it every winter back home.

Later we cruised over to Isla Mujeres for an hour of wandering around. It’s busier there — scooters buzzing past murals in faded pinks and blues, kids chasing each other with ice creams melting down their wrists. Playa Norte’s sand is almost white enough to hurt your eyes. I bought a coconut from an old guy who nodded at me like he’d seen a thousand tourists do the same thing. Didn’t even try to bargain; sometimes you just want to say thanks.
