The Experience

“You ever seen water this blue?” That’s what our guide, Ana, asked as we slowed the boat near Isla Contoy. I just stared — it was almost too bright to look at straight on. The spray from the speedboat still clung to my arms, salty and cool. We’d left Cancun early (private pickup, so no waiting around), and by the time we hit the reef for snorkeling, the sun was already high but not burning yet. Playa Norte’s sand is almost white enough to hurt your eyes. I bought a coconut from an old guy who nodded at me like he’d seen a thousand tourists do the same thing.
