The experience
The day starts before sunrise. A driver collects you from your accommodation in Roma, Condesa, Centro, Juárez, Polanco or Reforma between 4:30 and 5:00 AM and brings you to the launch site. You'll watch the ground crew prepare the balloon, then step into the basket for a shared flight lasting 40 to 60 minutes (timing depends on wind and weather). From above, the Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon and the Street of the Dead spread across the valley floor in a way no ground-level view can match.
After landing, breakfast waits at La Cueva, a restaurant in Teotihuacan itself. Then a local guide leads you through the archaeological site for about two hours, walking the main structures and stopping at the on-site museum. The guide speaks English or Spanish, so you follow the commentary in whichever language suits you. By 11:30 AM, the air-conditioned vehicle heads back to Mexico City (roughly an hour and a half depending on traffic), and drops you at your hotel.
The tour runs as a small group, which means you're not crammed into a massive tour bus, but you do share the balloon basket with other passengers. All balloon operators hold AFAC Mexico certification, the country's safety standard for commercial flights.
