The experience
The rental includes a full-suspension electric mountain bike fitted with helmet, safety glasses and a water bottle. You meet at Can Balam, a hybrid home and adventure base in the area, where you'll receive a safety briefing and sign the liability contract required for all riders. The bikes stay monitored throughout your ride, and you're free to explore the Zicatela terrain on your own schedule: no fixed route, no group pace. The one rule that matters: keep the bike off wet sand and very sandy patches where the tires will skid.
The six-hour window gives you real time in the landscape without the structure of a guided tour. You control where you go and how long you linger, as long as you stay within the Zicatela area boundaries and return when the time runs out. A guide is available in English, Spanish or Portuguese if you want one, though the activity is built around independent riding. The electric assist means you can cover ground and climb without the full effort of a pedal-only bike, which opens the terrain to riders who want the experience without exhaustion.
This is not a water sport and not a paved-path ride. The Zicatela area is a protected natural zone, and the activity is designed around ecological awareness. You're moving through wildlife habitat on a low-impact vehicle. Bring sunscreen and wear the safety gear provided. You'll need to be comfortable on a bike and have at least moderate cardiovascular fitness. The activity is not suitable for people with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor heart health.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I ride an electric bike if I've never used one before?
Yes, as long as you can ride a regular bike. The electric assist works automatically when you pedal, so there's no learning curve for the motor itself. The safety briefing at Can Balam covers the basics before you set out.
What happens if I want to stop and rest during the six hours?
You can rest whenever you want. The six-hour window is your total rental time, and you set the pace. Just make sure you're back at Can Balam when the time is up.
What is the Zicatela area like to ride through?
Zicatela is a protected natural zone near Puerto Escondido with natural terrain: dirt paths, some elevation, and wildlife habitat. You'll avoid water crossings and soft sand where tires lose grip, so you're staying on rideable ground. It's not a manicured trail system. It's the landscape itself.
Do I have to ride alone, or can I bring friends?
Each bike rental is exclusive to one person. You can't share or loan a bike to someone else. If friends want to ride, each person books their own rental. You can ride together in the same area at the same time.
Is a guide included, or do I navigate on my own?
The activity is self-guided by default. A guide is available in English, Spanish or Portuguese if you want one, but you choose that at checkout. Either way, you control your own route and pace within the Zicatela boundaries.
