Step-by-step itinerary
Boat tour visiting three islands
- Travel by boat from Holbox
- Visit Isla Pajaros and observe birds
- Visit Isla Pasión and enjoy beaches
- Swim in Yalahau Cenote (Ojo de Agua)
The experience
The boat leaves Holbox and heads 30 minutes out to the Yalahau Cenote, a large natural pool fed by fresh spring water and ringed with plants and shrubs. You can see it from a viewpoint above the water before swimming in it. The cenote sits in open country, far enough from the island that the water stays clear and the air stays quiet.
Isla Pasión is a 10-minute ride from Holbox: a small, undeveloped beach where the main draw is the calm water and the sense of being away from everything. Isla Pájaros, another 30 minutes out, is a protected bird sanctuary where flamingos, pelicans, ducks and other species live without cages or ties. The island has spaces set aside for their protection, and the birds stay in their natural habitat while you watch them from the boat or from the shore.
The tour includes a bilingual guide, a lifevest, life insurance and pickup from your hotel. Infants travel free on an adult's lap. The whole outing runs 3.5 hours, which leaves the rest of your day open for the island's other draws: the bioluminescent waters at night, the town's restaurants and shops, or simply time to rest.
