The experience
The ride out is 55 minutes on a safe, flat cycle path shaded by trees, heading east from central Oaxaca toward the town of Santa María del Tule. The Ahuehuete, the national tree of Mexico, grows in this region, and the landscape shifts as you pedal: agricultural fields open up, water springs from the mountains keep everything green, and the town itself sits in that fertile zone. Your guide is a local who knows the environment and the pre-Hispanic and contemporary history of the place, and you'll take breaks along the way so the pace stays manageable.
Once you reach the park, you enter on foot to stand in front of the Tule Tree itself. It's over 2,000 years old and holds the record for width: wider than most houses. The entrance fee to the park is 20 Mexican pesos per person, paid on arrival. After time at the tree, you head to the Santa María del Tule Gastronomic Market to rest and eat. This is where you buy your own breakfast: quesadillas, empanadas, champurrados and other Oaxacan dishes, plus juices, hot drinks, tejate, horchata and fresh waters. The return ride to central Oaxaca takes another 55 minutes, completing the 3-hour round trip.
You get a bicycle (available in sizes XL, L, M and S), a helmet, and technical assistance throughout. The guide speaks English or Spanish. The route is designed to be accessible. It's flat and shaded, and the operator notes it suits all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for pregnant travelers or anyone with poor cardiovascular health.
