Private Sailboat in Bacalar Lagoon: Captain for a Day
Take the helm of a sailboat and learn to navigate Bacalar's clearest water
A private sailing tour of Bacalar Lagoon in Mexico's Riviera Maya, where you choose the route—past the Pirate Canal, Cenote Negro, Bird Island and stromatolites, or to quieter anchorages—with a certified bilingual captain, optional sailing instruction, swimming, and kayak rental. Three hours includes three beers per adult, fruit beverages and snacks; service animals are welcome.
The Experience
You arrive at the lagoon and step aboard a sailboat crewed by someone who knows the water and speaks your language. The boat is yours for the afternoon—no itinerary handed down, no schedule forcing you past the places that catch your eye. You decide whether to sail toward the landmarks (the Pirate Canal, Cenote Negro, Bird Island, the stromatolites) or anchor in a quiet bay where the only sound is wind and water. The captain adjusts the sails while you watch or take the optional lesson and learn the basics of steering and trim.
Swimming happens whenever you want it. The water is clear enough to see the bottom, and you can slip in from the boat or paddle out on the kayak that comes with the rental. If birds interest you, the lagoon holds local and migratory species; if they don't, you ignore them. The three hours move at the pace of wind, not a clock. Three beers per adult, fresh fruit drinks and snacks are aboard; bring a towel if you want one, or ask the captain where to find one in town.
The boat is small enough to feel like your own and large enough that a couple, a family or a group of friends all fit without crowding. The captain is there to sail the boat and answer questions, not to narrate landmarks or fill silence. If you've never sailed before, the optional lesson turns the afternoon into something you'll remember differently than a regular boat ride—you'll know what you did, not just what you saw.

Can I choose which parts of Bacalar Lagoon to visit, or is the route set?
The route is yours to shape. You can sail toward the popular landmarks—the Pirate Canal, Cenote Negro, Bird Island and the stromatolites—or ask the captain to take you to quieter anchorages away from the crowds. The captain knows the water and will suggest options, but the day follows what interests you.
What time does the sailboat depart, and how long is the tour?
Three departure times are available: 8:00 a.m., a standard daytime slot, or an extended sunset cruise. The tour runs three hours from departure. The 8:00 a.m. option gets you on the water early; the sunset cruise extends into the evening light.
Is the optional sailing lesson included, or do I pay extra for it?
The sailing lesson is optional and added at checkout if you want it. The captain can teach you the basics of steering and sail trim during the tour, or you can simply relax and swim while the captain handles the boat.
What's included in the price, and what should I bring?
Three beers per adult, natural fruit beverages, fruit snacks, safety equipment and kayak rental are included. Bring a towel or ask the captain where to find one in town; gratuities and ground transportation to the lagoon are separate.
Is this tour safe for families with young children?
Yes. Specialized infant seats are available, and the boat is private, so the pace and stops suit your family's needs. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
What birds might I see on the lagoon?
Bacalar Lagoon hosts local and migratory bird species throughout the year. The captain can point them out if you're interested, though spotting them depends on the season and the time of day you sail.
