The experience

The tour opens at the Diego Rivera mural on Dolores Olmedo's property, a three-dimensional mosaic of pre-Hispanic deities built from volcanic rocks and seashells. Rivera created it as a gift for his longtime companion in 1956, and it stands as one of his most colorful works. Nothing like a flat fresco, but a relief that catches the light. From there you move to the Chapel of Peace, perched at the top of Las Brisas with a 180-degree view of Acapulco Bay and the Pacific. The white cross marks the highest point in the city, and the view is the reason most travelers come here.

The cliff divers show happens at scenic overlooks called Sinfonía del Mar, where you step out of the vehicle and watch from a balcony above the water. The divers jump from 134 feet with no nets or ropes. It is raw and extreme. You also pass Hotel Flamingos, built on top of Acapulco's highest cliffs 450 feet above the ocean. In the 1950s through 1980s, Johnny Weissmuller and John Wayne ran it as a hideaway for Hollywood's biggest names. The bar is still known for inventing the Coco Loco drink. An optional stop at a Mexican art and silver shop lets you browse Taxco sterling silver, fire opals, and folk crafts, all at varying price ranges.
