A 3-day tour from Tuxtla Gutiérrez combining a boat tour through Encrucijada Biosphere Reserve (known for its mangrove channels, jaguars, river crocodiles and over 300 bird species) with two nights at Argovia Finca Resort on the Coffee Route, where you'll see how four generations of growers work the land and taste coffee at sunrise. Includes transport, guide, all meals, accommodation and national park fees. Children from age 12 welcome.

The experience

Day one starts early with a drive to Las Garzas, where a local guide takes you by boat through the mangrove channels of Encrucijada. The reserve's ecosystem, declared protected in 1995, shelters jaguars, river crocodiles, alligators, spider monkeys and migratory birds alongside the tallest mangroves in Mexico. You'll stop at El Ballenato, an ecotourism center run by the local community, for lunch before heading to Argovia Finca Resort in the foothills of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas.

Day two centers on the coffee farms themselves. After breakfast, you walk the nurseries and learn how the resort's four generations of growers practice sustainable agriculture: diversification, organic waste treatment, respect for the environment. You'll see the pisca, the harvest of coffee fruit, and how it's processed from robust arabica to roasted grain. The afternoon is free. Optional spa and temazcal treatments are available at the resort.

On day three, a jeep or walking path takes you to a viewpoint for sunrise and bird watching over the farm. You'll have coffee in the mountains before lunch, then the drive back to Tuxtla Gutiérrez arrives around 6 p.m. Transport by air-conditioned minivan, a live guide in English or Spanish, bottled water throughout, and all meals (three breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners) are included.

Is this one for you?The tour runs on an early schedule each day (the first boat departs at dawn, and day three's sunrise viewpoint requires an early start), which is what puts both the mangrove channels and the mountain coffee experience into three days instead of stretching across a longer trip.
