The experience
The day starts at Bois Chéri, where tea leaves hand-picked from the cool upper plateau are processed using methods that date back to the 19th century. You walk through the modernised factory to see how freshly harvested leaves move through oxidation, then explore the museum's photographs and exhibits on colonial life and Mauritian heritage. The air carries the fresh, woody aroma of the leaves during processing: a detail that stays with you through the rest of the drive.
From there the tour moves through cultural landmarks most visitors miss: Amma Tookay Temple, a colourful place of worship nestled among sugar cane fields in Camp Diable, built around a sacred rock that workers could not move or break in the 19th century; and Senneville Bridge, one of the island's highest railway bridges, now a viewpoint over rainforest and the Savanne region stretching toward the ocean. Lunch arrives at Riambel Beach, a quiet southern stretch where you eat and rest before the coastline reveals itself.
The second half of the day is the wild coast itself. Gris Gris is the southernmost beach, where cliffs meet the Indian Ocean with no protective reef: waves reach the rocks with force that creates a spectacular display of spray and sound. La Roche Qui Pleure (the Weeping Rock) sits nearby, where water flows down the cliff face as waves crash, creating the appearance of tears. Rivière des Galets offers a different landscape: a shoreline of smooth pebbles instead of sand, with Îlot Sancho, a small islet you can walk to during low tide. The drive along Baie du Cap coastal road winds between mountains and ocean, and Macondé Viewpoint sits at the highest point, offering a panorama of the winding coastline and turquoise waters. The tour ends at Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Mauritius' most recognisable mountains, where you can swim, relax on white sand and take in its silhouette while holding a cold Phoenix beer.

What happens inside the Bois Chéri Tea Factory?
Bois Chéri is a working tea producer where hand-picked leaves from the cool upper plateau are processed through traditional methods, including oxidation. You walk through the modernised factory to see the transformation from plant to teapot, then explore a museum with photographs and exhibits on the history of tea, colonial life and Mauritian heritage. The factory has produced hundreds of tons of tea every year since the 19th century.
Can I swim or wade in the water at any of the coastal stops?
Le Morne Beach at the end of the tour has white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters suitable for swimming. Rivière des Galets, with its pebble shoreline, is not ideal for swimming, but you can walk out to Îlot Sancho, a small islet accessible on foot during low tide. Gris Gris and La Roche Qui Pleure are dramatic clifftop sites where you walk and admire the views rather than enter the water.
Does the tour include lunch, and where do we eat?
Yes, a traditional Mauritian lunch is included and served at Riambel Beach, a peaceful stretch of southern coastline. This is a quiet spot away from crowds where you can relax and experience the authentic atmosphere of South Mauritius.
What is La Roche Qui Pleure and why is it called the Weeping Rock?
La Roche Qui Pleure is a natural phenomenon on the wild southern coastline near Gris Gris. With no coral reef to protect this part of the island, powerful waves from the Indian Ocean crash against the cliffs with incredible force. As the waves hit the rocks, water flows down the cliff face, creating the appearance of tears that inspired its poetic name.
How long does the tour take and what is the vehicle like?
The tour runs six to nine hours depending on pace and conditions. You travel in a private, air-conditioned SUV with bottled water provided throughout the day. A guide in English or French accompanies you to all stops.
