The experience
The day opens at Port Louis Market, where you move through the Grand Port Louise Bazaar and China Town to browse local vegetables, exotic spices and clothing stalls, then continue to the Caudan Waterfront. Fort Adelaide, the 19th-century military fortress known as 'The Citadel', sits nearby with panoramic city views. From there the route heads north to Pamplemousse Gardens, the oldest botanical garden in the southern hemisphere, established in 1735 and now named Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden. The giant water lilies are the signature draw.
The tour includes a stop at Domaine de Labourdonnais, a neo-classical estate house built between 1856 and 1859 and occupied by the same Mauritian family for over 150 years. Guides walk you through the dining room with its detailed wallpaper and teak furniture, the pantry with its large preservation jars, and the landscaped gardens and orchards outside. The estate runs a fine dining restaurant overlooking the château, and a shop selling jams, fruit pastes and rum made on the property. Next comes the Sri Draupadi Amman Tamil Temple, then the final stop at Cap Malheureux on the island's northern tip, where the simple Notre Dame Auxiliatrice church sits with its bright red roof against turquoise water and the headland of Le Coin de Mire: one of the most photographed sights on the island.
You travel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water and WiFi on board. The guide speaks English, French or German and brings the island's culture and heritage to life throughout the day. Pickup is included in the booking.
