The experience

The tour opens at the Port-Louis Central Market, the city's largest bazaar since Victorian times, where you walk past hawkers selling fresh produce, local dishes and handcrafted souvenirs. The fruit and vegetable sections, including herbal medicines, give the clearest picture of everyday Port Louis life. From there the guide takes you to La Citadelle (Fort Adelaine), then to the Caudan Waterfront, a shopping and leisure hub built in 1996 on the water's edge that mixes retail with restaurants and local art galleries.

The Cathedral of Saint Louis, built in 1814–15 and promoted to cathedral status in 1847, sits at the heart of the colonial story. The guide explains the Latin-cross design and points out the obelisk with four lion heads at the front, once a working fountain carrying water from the Pouce Stream, now a monument without function. Chinatown, centred on Royal Street between two friendship gates, shows the mercantile life of the Chinese community through busy restaurants, grocery stores and the sound of mah-jong tiles. The final stop is Aapravasi Ghat, the remains of an 1849 immigration depot on Trou Fanfaron bay where indentured labourers from India, Eastern Africa, Madagascar, China and Southeast Asia arrived to work the sugar estates: a UNESCO site marking the start of the modern diaspora.

The vehicle is air-conditioned and the pickup time is confirmed the day before. Hotel collection is available for guests on the North and East coasts. Those on the West, South West or South East coasts will need to arrange their own transport to the meeting point.
