The experience
The day starts at Le Domaine des Aubineaux, a colonial mansion built in 1872 in the cool highlands near Curepipe, where you walk through the Parc Floral and visit La Maison des Essences to see how essential oils are distilled. From there the route moves to Bois Cheri, the island's first tea plantation, dating to 1892. You walk the factory floor to learn how harvested leaves become finished tea, then sit in the chalet overlooking the plantation and the lake to taste the result. The tea plants surrounding the lake are at least 125 years old.
Next is Rhumerie de Saint Aubin, an estate that has been making sugar-cane rum since 1819 and claims Mauritius' first agricultural rum. A guide walks you through the pot still distillation process and the "heart of the distillation" that shapes the final spirit, then you taste a selection of rums macerated with natural ingredients. Lunch follows on the veranda of the colonial house turned restaurant, now called Le Saint Aubin, with views of the estate gardens and a menu mixing European and local cooking. The final stop is La Vanille Nature Park, a 3.5-hectare reserve where you walk among over a thousand giant Aldabra tortoises, more than 2,000 Nile crocodiles, and other wildlife including monkeys, iguanas, deer and geckos.
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as is transport by private vehicle between all four sites. Your guide speaks English or French and leads you through each stop. Coffee or tea is served alongside the tastings and lunch.

Is this one for you?Eight hours is long enough to move unhurried through all four stops without backtracking, but it means the day is full from pickup to drop-off. There's no time for a side errand or a second meal elsewhere. Book this if you want to see how tea and rum are actually made, not just taste them at the end.
