The experience

"That’s the sound of the fruit bats," our guide grinned, pausing mid-step as a soft rustle echoed above us. We’d just entered Black River Gorges, and already my shirt was sticking to my back. The air here is thick and green, almost sweet. The path started gentle but turned steep quick, roots grabbing at my boots. I kept stopping to catch my breath or watch tiny lizards dart across sunlit rocks. At one point, I swear I smelled something like crushed guava mixed with damp earth. Halfway up, we reached Mare aux Joncs Gorge: locals call it Bats Valley for good reason.
