The Experience

"That’s the sound of the fruit bats," our guide grinned, pausing mid-step as a soft rustle echoed above us. We’d just entered Black River Gorges, and already my shirt was sticking to my back—the air here is thick and green, almost sweet. The path started gentle but turned steep quick, roots grabbing at my boots. I kept stopping to catch my breath or watch tiny lizards dart across sunlit rocks. At one point, I swear I smelled something like crushed guava mixed with damp earth. Maybe it was just me being hungry.

Halfway up, we reached Mare aux Joncs Gorge—locals call it Bats Valley for good reason. Thousands of Mauritian fruit bats hung from branches like little umbrellas, flapping and shifting whenever a breeze came through. Our guide (I think his name was Arvind?) told us they’re harmless and actually kind of cute once you get used to their faces. He laughed when I tried to say their name in Creole—probably butchered it. The view from there was wild: green rolling out forever, clouds snagged on distant peaks.

We finally hit the top—400 meters up—and everything opened wide. You could see the West Coast shimmering way below: blue lagoons, tiny villages tucked into folds of hills. It’s hard to describe that feeling… like you’re standing right inside someone’s secret postcard. Coming down was easier but my knees complained (should’ve stretched more). Near the end, Arvind led us off-trail for a swim in the river—cold enough to make you gasp but honestly perfect after all that sweat. I still think about how quiet it felt there except for water and birds arguing somewhere overhead.
