The experience

Le Morne Brabant rises 500 metres above sea level on Mauritius's western coast, and the hike to its peak is the core of this day. A certified guide meets you at the village and leads you up through forest to the summit, where the Indian Ocean and the island's coastline spread below you. The climb is moderate in difficulty and takes 3.5 to 4 hours round-trip. You'll need hiking shoes and reasonable cardiovascular fitness. Once you're back at sea level, the rest of the day unfolds as a series of stops, each one a different kind of view.

Macondé comes next: a viewpoint on the south-west coast where the road curves sharply around a cliff face, creating the dramatic framing that makes it one of Mauritius's most photographed spots. From there, you move inland to Chamarel 7-Coloured Earth, a geopark where the dunes display seven distinct colours in their mineral layers. The final stop is Chamarel Falls, a 100-metre vertical drop set into dense vegetation. The waterfall is the most famous in Mauritius and the reason many visitors come to this part of the island. Your driver handles all transport between stops and waits while you explore, and the tour includes parking fees and waiting time built into the schedule.
