The experience
The tour starts at Trou aux Cerfs, a dormant volcano at the highest point of Mauritius's central plateau, where you get panoramic views across the island. From there the route moves south through Ganga Talao, the sacred lake ringed by giant Shiva statues, then to Alexandra Falls and a viewpoint over the Black River Gorges toward the west coast. The guide navigates the scenic stops and handles the timing so you move through the day without arranging anything yourself.
Lunch is a 3-course meal at Chamarel village with a choice of chicken, fish or vegetarian options, plus soft drinks included. Before and after, you visit the Chamarel Waterfall (the highest in Mauritius and set inside a private park), and the Seven Coloured Earth Geopark, where volcanic ash has created bands of red, purple, green and other mineral hues across the landscape. Wine tasting at Takamaka Wine Palace (for guests 18 and over) is included in the package, so you sample the island's lychee wine without an extra charge.
The final stop is Curious Corner, an optical illusion park unique to Mauritius, designed to leave visitors disoriented and amused. The whole day runs about 8 hours in an air-conditioned vehicle with a private guide. The route is wheelchair accessible, and the operator can arrange infant seats if you're traveling with small children.
