The experience
The tour opens at Trou aux Cerfs, a 605-meter dormant volcano in Curepipe with a crater 80 meters deep, then moves through the island's western highlands to Ganga Talao, a crater lake sacred to Hindu worship. Alexandra Falls offers a quiet retreat from the main tourist routes, and the Black River Gorges lookout gives a panoramic view across the mountainous west coast down to the sea. From there you head to Rhumerie de Chamarel for a guided distillery tour and rum tasting, discovering how the facility processes sugar cane into the island's agricultural rums.
The Chamarel Viewpoint opens onto a panoramic sweep of the southwest coast, with Le Morne Brabant mountain to the left and turquoise water below. Lunch follows at a local seafood restaurant of your choice. The Seven Coloured Earth Geopark, a geological oddity of sand dunes in seven distinct colors (red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow) sits in the middle of lush vegetation. The colors separated through the conversion of basaltic lava to clay minerals. A tortoise park and coffee shop sit on the grounds. The first day ends at Flic en Flac beach, where you can swim, snorkel or watch the sunset.
Day two moves north to Port Louis, the capital, where you climb Fort Adelaide for city views, then explore the Port Louis Bazaar and Chinatown for local vegetables, spices and clothing. The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, the oldest in the southern hemisphere dating to 1735, showcases tropical plants across its grounds. L'Aventure du Sucre, a restored sugar factory turned heritage museum, traces 200 years of the island's sugar history through interactive exhibits. The day includes stops at Mont Choisy beach, Grand-Baie village with its bazaar and restaurants, and Pereybere beach, recommended for calm swimming. Cap Malheureux, a fishing village on the northern tip, features the red-roofed Notre Dame Auxiliatrice church, one of the most photographed sights on the island.
Day three ventures south to La Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park, where 23 colored earth formations spread across 450 acres alongside activities like quad biking, ziplines and trekking. La Vanille Nature Park holds over 1,000 giant Aldabra tortoises, 2,000 Nile crocodiles, monkeys, iguanas and an insectarium with 26,000 specimens. Gris Gris Cape, at the island's southern extreme, has no coral reef. Large waves break violently against the shore, visible from a trail leading to a rock formation. The scenic coastal drive south offers turquoise sea on one side and mountains on the other. Rivière des Galets Beach, between Souillac and Bel Ombre, is lined with polished pebbles rather than sand. Maconde viewpoint at Baie du Cap sits on a rocky cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. Le Morne beach, at the foot of the UNESCO-listed Morne Brabant mountain, stretches for miles with white sand and casuarina trees. It is known as one of the world's best kite-surfing spots and offers clear water for scuba diving and snorkeling.
