Swim into a working coral reef with someone who knows every fish in it

A guided snorkeling activity in southern Martinique where you boat to hand-picked coral sites, swim the reef with a state-certified instructor, and learn how it works as you go. Groups stay under 13 people. The guide provides all snorkeling equipment, an introduction to marine biology in the water, and an aperitif with snacks when you're back on the boat. Children from age 5 are welcome.

The Experience

Stéphane, a state-certified diving instructor, runs this as a small-group outing—never more than 13 people—and he picks the snorkeling sites himself based on what the reef is doing that day. You board the boat and head to southern Martinique's best coral zones, the ones he knows well enough to navigate by instinct. On the way, he walks you through what you're about to see: how a reef works, what lives there, why it matters. Then you're in the water with him, swimming the surface while he points out the structure and the animals, answering questions as you drift.

The gear is his—mask, fins, snorkel—so you show up with nothing but a swimsuit. He's trained to work with swimmers at any level, from people who've never put a face in saltwater to confident swimmers who want to go deeper into the detail. If the sea is calm enough, he photographs the reef and the fish, and you get the images afterward. The whole outing runs about two and a half hours from boat to boat, with an aperitif and snacks waiting when you climb back aboard.

Top questions

What's the water like when I'm snorkeling the coral in Martinique?

Southern Martinique's coral reefs sit in shallow, clear water where you can see the structure and the fish without diving. Stéphane picks sites based on conditions that day, so the visibility and the life you encounter shift with the season and the weather, but the reefs themselves are the draw—they're working ecosystems, not just a backdrop.

Do I need to know how to snorkel before I book?

No. Stéphane works with beginners and strong swimmers alike. He provides all the equipment and shows you how to use it. If you're not a confident swimmer, he has solutions to keep you comfortable and safe in the water.

What happens if the weather turns bad?

Photos are taken when sea conditions are favorable, so rough water might mean you skip the camera work but still snorkel. Stéphane makes the call on whether conditions are safe enough to go out at all.

Can my young child come snorkeling?

Children from age 5 are welcome. Infants have to sit on an adult's lap on the boat. Stéphane adjusts the pace and the depth to match the group, so kids can participate without being rushed.

How do I get to the boat?

Public transportation options are available near the departure point. Stéphane can advise on the best way to reach the boat if you don't have a rental car.
