The experience
The Orangutan Rehabilitation Center sits inside the lush Sepilok Forest Reserve in Sandakan, about an hour's flight from Kota Kinabalu. The tour picks you up from your hotel in the morning, drives you to the airport for the short flight to Sandakan, then heads straight into the reserve. The center specializes in caring for baby orphan orangutans (animals whose mothers were likely killed or who were kept as pets), and teaching them the survival skills they would have learned naturally. Unlike a zoo, the orangutans aren't confined. They come and go as they please while becoming reaccustomed to living wild.
At feeding time you'll watch these shy, gentle creatures eat and move through the forest canopy. The tour also takes you to see sun bears, another animal kept at the center. Sun bear cubs that grow up around people lose their ability to survive independently. Many forget they're bears at all and seek out humans when released, causing problems in nearby villages. Seeing both species at the center shows the work of rehabilitation in action. Lunch is included partway through the day, and the guide explains the center's conservation efforts as you move through the reserve.
The full day runs about 10 hours from pickup to drop-off. You'll return to Kota Kinabalu on an evening flight, with the guide handling the logistics. Choose city center pickup if you're staying downtown, or outskirt hotel pickup if you're elsewhere in Kota Kinabalu. The minivan is air-conditioned, and the tour is suitable for all fitness levels. Families with infants and small children can bring a pram or stroller.
