The experience

Your guide picks you up at 8:30 am from your hotel in central George Town and heads first to Chew Jetty, the largest and most active Chinese waterfront settlement in Penang. From there the walk moves through Armenian Street, lined with shophouses, artist galleries and some of Penang's best street art, all within the core of the UNESCO World Heritage zone. The route then passes Kapitan Keling Mosque, built in the 19th century by Indian Muslim traders. Its walls carry calligraphy panels and stained glass with geometric and floral designs, and the floor is polished white marble with prayer rugs laid in rows.

The walk continues to Sri Mahamariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu temple in Penang, standing in the same spot for two centuries with carved sculptures of gods and goddesses above its entrance. Little India comes next, a neighborhood of shops and vendors selling Indian clothing, jewelry and street food. Then you reach the Goddess of Mercy Temple, the first temple built in Georgetown by Chinese settlers, with dragon-entwined pillars carved from greenstone supporting its high roof. St. George's Church, a 19th-century Anglican building and the oldest purpose-built church of its kind in Southeast Asia, follows before the tour ends at Khoo Kongsi, an ornate Chinese clan house that marks the dominant presence of the Chinese community in Penang.

The full walk covers substantial ground and involves a high level of physical fitness. Your guide will drop you back at your hotel after three hours on foot.
